If you are facing serious challenges related to the health of your mouth and jaw, we can help. At the River Edge Dental Center for TMJ, Sleep Apnea, & Reconstructive Dentistry, we focus on life-changing, even life-saving dentistry. Chronic pain, depression, heart disease, memory problems, Alzheimer’s disease, dementia and more all have dental connections. We understand these connections and know that just as poor health in the mouth can cause these negative effects, proper oral health can heal and reverse them.
Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ or sometimes TMD) occurs when an imbalance in the jaw system results in symptoms that may start in the jaw but may progress to impact the head, face, ears, neck, shoulder, and arms. It may be overactive muscles in the jaw, displaced discs in the jaw joint, pinched nerves, and more immediate causes that result in a wide range of symptoms, including:
We offer advanced, nonsurgical treatment for TMJ that can reduce or eliminate symptoms and prevent their recurrence.
Sleep apnea is when your breathing stops intermittently at night. When breathing stops, your brain awakens just enough to start it up again. This may occur hundreds of times a night, even though you’re not aware of it, though your sleep partner may notice snoring. But during the day you may be aware of its effects, including:
Inability to get good rest
Mood disorders, including depression
High blood pressure
Fortunately, sleep apnea is highly treatable. The frontline treatment for sleep apnea is CPAP, but for people who can’t adapt to CPAP — and there are many — oral appliance therapy is a great alternative. It’s even a good frontline treatment for some people.

I’ve had a terrible fear of going to a dentist since my youth. Dr. Marten and his staff extinguished my fear and made me feel extremely comfortable even in the midst of an extraction. I felt absolutely no pain. You would be hard-pressed to find a better dentist and staff than this office. Thank you all!
Meet Dr. Marlen Martirossian
Dr. Marlen Martirossian is a dentist committed to continually improving his ability to change his patients’ lives through dentistry. This means that he is continually learning about new and better approaches to dentistry and honing his abilities in his practice.
His education goes far beyond his Doctor of Dental Science (DDS). Studying at the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies (LVI). LVI is the premier school for and neuromuscular dentistry. His studies included a focus on the treatment of temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ) using neuromuscular dentistry. He learned how to use computers to analyze bite problems and the art and science of correcting them to alleviate TMJ symptoms such as headaches, jaw pain, tinnitus, and more.
This test is an inexpensive self-screening tool for those who want help in determining if they have TMJ. It should only take a few minutes, and with the result of this self assessment you can decide if you need to see a TMJ dentist.
