What is TMJ Disorder?
TMJ disorder, or TMD, stands for temporomandibular joint disorder. It’s when there is an imbalance or excess muscle tension in your temporomandibular joint—your jaw joint. It connects your jaw to your skull, and the largest of your cranial nerves runs through it.
TMJ disorder can cause debilitating symptoms that have you calling into work, being distant with your family, and not enjoying your favorite hobbies. The symptoms of TMJ are:
- Jaw Pain
- Jaw Popping or Clicking
- Face Pain
- Neck, Shoulder, or Back Pain
- Tinnitus, Vertigo, and Other Ear Symptoms
- Damaged or Worn Teeth
- Tingling and Numbness in the hands and fingers

How Do Botox and Fillers Work?
Botox and fillers can relieve some of the most common TMJ symptoms.
- Jaw pain
- Neck and shoulder spasms and muscle tightness
- Teeth grinding
TMJ occurs when your jaw joint is overworked or misaligned. It causes muscle tension that pulls at your neck, shoulders, ears, and your major facial nerve, the trigeminal nerve.
Botox and fillers are neuromodulators—energy released by a neuron that changes the function and activity of another neuron. In Botox, they use botulinum toxin type A to block nerve signals from the brain. This is how Botox and fillers relax muscles and prevent specific movements. With the muscles surrounding your TMJ joint relaxed, the tension that causes your painful symptoms is released. Many patients report feeling symptom relief for three months after River Edge Botox TMJ treatment.
After Botox treatment for TMJ, you’ll have increased jaw mobility, no pain in your jaw, head, neck, or shoulders, and you’ll likely even notice that your nocturnal teeth grinding stops.
Our River Edge Botox and Filler TMJ Treatment Process
We typically use Botox TMJ treatment as a supplemental treatment and pain reliever. There are instances in which we would solely use Botox and filler treatment, but typically, we use it in conjunction with an orthotic or a full mouth reconstruction. TMJ treatment is different per person.
Your River Edge TMJ dentist will examine your jaw and inject the Botox using a fine needle. The procedure is quick, with only minimal discomfort. You’ll be in and out of the office in about 10 minutes. This treatment may need to be performed several times. It all depends on the severity and treatment path of your TMJ disorder. You’ll notice an improvement in your symptoms after a day or two, but usually, it takes 7-10 days to see a real improvement.
Are There Any Side Effects of Using Botox to Treat TMJ?
At River Edge Dental, your Botox and filler treatments are entirely safe. Your local River Edge TMJ dentists are trained and experienced in using Botox to treat TMJ disorder symptoms. You might experience sensitivity, swelling, and minor bruising at the injection site, but these side effects are minimal and will resolve in just a few days.
Even though we are using Botox and fillers as a medical treatment for TMJ, you’ll receive the added benefits of smoothing wrinkles and filling out loose skin near the injection site. You’ll start to feel better soon, and you’ll look great, too!
